Used shortboards in Bali
A performance shortboard trades float and paddle speed for the ability to turn hard from the rail. It rewards a surfer who can already generate their own speed and punishes one who cannot. Most used shortboards in Bali come from travellers sizing down for reef season and selling before they fly.

Buying a used shortboard
Who it suits
Intermediate and above, in waves with a real face. Around 0.32 to 0.55 litres per kilogram of body weight.
What to check on a used one
- Press the deck under both feet: thin performance boards dent and delaminate there first.
- Sight down the rails for a buckle. A shortboard that has been through a reef takes a crease before it snaps.
- Check the volume is printed on the stringer. On a shortboard a two-litre error changes the whole board.
