Used fish in Bali
A fish is short, wide and flat, usually with a swallow tail and twin or quad fins. It generates speed on its own, which is why it works when the wave does not. Ride one four to six inches shorter than your shortboard and expect it to go in a straight line beautifully and turn tightly only if you ask it properly.

Buying a used fish
Who it suits
Small and mushy waves, and any surfer who wants to have fun on a bad day. Add about five per cent to your usual volume.
What to check on a used one
- Swallow tails take impact at the two points. Check both tips for old repairs.
- Confirm which fin system it has and whether the fins are included. Twin keels are expensive to replace.
- A fish that has been ridden as a beginner board often has a soft deck. Press it.
