What delamination actually is

A surfboard is a foam blank with fibreglass laminated onto it. Delamination is that bond letting go, usually because heat expanded the foam and pushed the glass off it, or because water got in and worked the two apart. The glass is still there. It is just no longer attached to what it is supposed to be stiffening.

It matters because a delaminated panel carries no load. The board flexes in the wrong places, the patch grows every session, and the bubble eventually splits and takes on water.

Finding it

Thumb press: Run your thumb over the whole deck with firm pressure, in overlapping lines. Sound glass feels hard and gives nothing. A delaminated patch dips slightly and makes a faint crackling sound as the glass moves against the foam.
Raking light: Tilt the board so light runs along the surface rather than at it. A lifted panel shows as a shallow dome or a ripple that the surrounding deck does not have.
Colour: A separated panel often looks milky or lighter than the glass around it, because there is now a thin layer of air behind it.
The usual places: The deck under the front foot, the rail line where a board gets clamped in racks, and anywhere on a board that has spent time on a hot roof or a black car interior.

How bad is it

A patch the size of a coin under the front foot: normal wear on an older board, repairable, worth a small discount.
A patch the size of your hand on the deck: it will grow. Budget for a repair and price the board accordingly.
Anything on the bottom: worse than the same patch on the deck, because the bottom is what the water is pushing on.
Delamination plus staining: water is already in the foam. Two problems, not one.

Stopping it happening to your board

Almost all delamination in a hot climate is heat damage. Do not leave a board in a closed car, do not leave it deck-up in direct sun on the sand, and do not leave it strapped to a roof rack at midday. A cheap reflective bag is the single best thing you can buy for a board in Bali.
